The Accelerator Research Division of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks an accelerator scientist with a proven track record of recognized scientific achievement in accelerator physics and beam dynamics.
The ARD Beam Physics Department performs research and development on charged particle collective effects, physics of free electron laser (FEL), and beam optics and nonlinear dynamics.
The group supports the operating accelerators at SLAC and studies beam physics that can enable or limit future accelerators.
Members work closely with other accelerator R&D programs for enhancing the scientific capabilities of the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) and FACET-II.
The ongoing LCLS-II (and its high energy upgrade) project will construct a high average power linac capable of delivering high-brightness beams at high repetition rate (up to 1 MHz) to two X-ray undulators.
Modeling the facility with a live configuration is critical to benchmark the accelerator design and to improve the operation performance.
Significant R&D topics such as advanced beam dynamics and operating modes will be carried out for expanding the facility capabilities.
We seek a candidate with experience in accelerator optics design, modeling, and control room machine performance development.
Possible research topics include advanced beam optics design, accelerator live modeling, advanced beam dynamics and optimization, beam stability improvement, feedback and controls.
Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options.
Your specific responsibilities include:
Research on accelerator optics design and live modeling for the existing and future SLAC accelerators using Bmad.
Research on advanced R&D programs for improving the SLAC accelerator performance.
Research on beam dynamics and collective effects on existing and future accelerators.
Contribute to the LCLS-II commissioning and machine development studies.
Note:
Appointment to the Staff Scientist level requires a review and evaluation of documented scientific achievement.
Applicants should include a cover letter, a statement of research including brief summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and names of three references for future letters of recommendation with the application.
